I wanted to leave this review for the HAYWARD SP1091LX Above Ground Dyna-Ski Pool Skimmer in relation to the Sams club above ground pools, my reason for this is because i cant find any info anywhere on whether these skimmers fit my pool, so i took a leap of faith and bought one, and i am GLAD I DID!.
the sams club pools are similar to intex pools but they have a unique skimmer attached with a waste of an excuse for a pump! (if you own one then i need say no more about that), so after one season of green water, a mosquito haven and, many happy frogs, and a few water bills for refilling the pool i finally decided to get real and refit the pump, skimmer and vacuum bits and pieces.
first of all i purchased a 1/2hp hayward pump with filter drum attached. I think its was the cl200 or something, you have to buy one of these to keep your pool water clean so if your about to buy a pool then note that its going to cost you another $200 or so total to really make it worthwile. i bought the pump on craigslist, you can get pumps on there quite cheaply...sshhhh dont tell amazon though.
then you can buy pipes from your local pool store very cheaply...but heres the reason your reading this...does the skimmer fit sams club pools.. well YES it does, the standard size fits BUT, you will need to trim the hole a little bigger, maybe 1 inch around at the most...its very easy to do, just take the rubber gasket that comes with the skimmer, after you remove the old skimmer just get a sharpie and hold the gasket over the original hole and mark around the INSIDE hole on the gasket, INSIDE hole, very important, if you do it on the outside hole then you will need a new pool liner, which is the pool right. After you draw the line around the INSIDE hole, get a very sharp carpet cutting knife or a razor blade and trim to the line you drew, its easy, but be aware that you want the hole in the middle because that part of the liner is double reinforced and if you go outside that area you will rip your pool.once thats done the gasket will slide over the hole on the inside and outside because it has a collar on it, then mark the holes where the screws go in the gasket and push the holes through with a spikey object. after that here is a good trick, put the square plate over the gasket and put all the screws (10 of them) through the plate,gasket,liner, outer side of the gasket and outside liner, when all ten are in line up the skimmer itself with the screws (the holes from the old skimmer wont be in the right place but dont worry because when you tighten all the screws the gasket will seal those holes and they are mostly above the water line anyway), you WILL have to move some screws around but they are easy to push around, line up the top three first!, i didnt and i had to use a mirror to look up inside and line them up, it wasnt a small mirror either, it was off the wall because i dont have a small one LOL. then slowly tighten each screw one or two turns each going round one at a time in sequence, once this is done you have a new skimmer on board.
this skimmer is Excellent as a replacement for sams club pools skimmers,you dont only get the skimmer, you also get the eyeball return valve, the weir, a debris basket, and the downpipe adaptor. the water flow is increased a lot and you should have no trouble running your pool for many seasons. a great price too and it is made to work with hayward pumps. best purchase i have made for this pool!!
I know this review may seem obvious, but there are a lot of people out there that need the info, just use your patience and a very sharp knife and you will be happy, hope this helps :)
update on 07/13/2012: the skimmer still works perfectly, no leaks and it still looks new, its still the best upgrade i have made on this pool
